About Hidden Figures Tutoring: Nurturing Maths Confidence

Meet Teresa

I'm Teresa, the founder of Hidden Figures Tutoring. I studied Mathematics at Exeter, then completed my PGCE there too before training as a teacher, and went on to spend twenty years teaching in a top independent senior school, working with hundreds of students of every ability and every relationship with the subject, from those who loved it to those who dreaded walking into the classroom.

Over the course of my career I took on a wide range of roles, including Head of Year and Academic Tutor, where I supported students who needed a little extra help and encouragement to achieve the grades they were capable of.

Colleagues have consistently described me as calm, kind, reliable and exceptionally organised, qualities I bring directly into every tutoring session, because I know that consistency and patient reassurance are just as important as the maths itself. Confidence, resilience and self-belief rarely come from being told to "just try harder." They come from steady, patient support and from someone who genuinely believes in you.

More recently, I completed a specialist qualification in Dyscalculia, achieving my Level 5 while juggling family life and a full teaching timetable, and I'm now working towards my Level 7. I'm also a fully registered member of the British Dyscalculia Association. Together, this has deepened my understanding of the different ways students experience and struggle with maths, and how to teach in a way that truly meets them where they are.

In 2026, after two decades in the classroom, I made the decision to step away from school teaching to focus fully on tutoring, because one-to-one, tailored support is where I've always seen students make the biggest leaps forward. Hidden Figures Tutoring is the result: a space built on kindness, patience and a genuine belief that every student can find their way to confidence and success in maths.
